The Hemman family makes wine for everyone. For years we made wine just for special occasions and friends and family. People told us they loved our wine. So ten years later we are still making wine. Offering award winning semi & sweet wines. Honest, simple, country wines is what we make. Made for the way we live. We wouldn't have it any other way.
We cultivated the soil of the earth and nuture the gift the land gives us - the grapes. In Southeast Missouri a good bottle of wine starts here. From there we produce country wines so people can enjoy a glass without knowing any fancy wine terms. Folks simply like our wines because they taste good. This is more than a winery its an experience.
If you're anything like the rest of us these days, your life is a series of things you gotta do. Well, here's a chance to do something a little different. Slow down and relax in our wine garden by the fire pit, tap your foot to some music and discover why a day in the country is worth a month in town.
Walking through the front door at Hemman Winery is a lot like taking a step back in time. Hear the sounds of your boots cross the worn wooden floor. Browse through the old store shelves that nowadays hold bottles of wine and reminders of another time. Visit the Barber Shop in the side room. Sit in the chair where Al use to cut many a neighbors hair. Sit at the barrel tables and enjoy your wine and food. Or look at Brazeau's largest beer can collection. If walls could talk, I'm sure you would hear laughter and story telling from the community residence from years past.
The Hemman family unpretentious approach to wine making produces wine for the common folk. Meet Doug Hemman, the wine maker, or stop by and ask him questions if you are trying your hand at hand crafted wine yourself..
How did Doug get started? His father Al showed him what to do. Al learned from his mother. Wine making goes back generations in the Hemman family. I guess you could say the art of wine making made its way to Perry County with our German Saxon ancestors in the early 1800's.
Here at Hemman Winery we make wine that tastes like the fruit it's made from.
Now Doug is not the only one that has his hand in creating the wine you will enjoy, Dorothy, his mother and Bonnie his wife, also has a hand in it. Once in a while you will also see Doug and Bonnie's two children around helping as well.
